Programs for Children – Winter 2011

Birthday Book ClubNew! Birthday Book Club
Children ages birth to 5 can receive a free book and bag during the month of their birthday.  Parents, just show your Harper Woods library card to a children’s librarian.  Made possible by the Harper Woods School District and Friends of the Library.  For questions or concerns regarding your child’s development, please contact The Harper Woods School District: Linda Kelly (313.245.5307) and Robin Barone (313.245.5309)

Storytime (ages 2-5 w/ a caregiver)
Fun stories, songs, rhymes & movement provide a time of social interaction and learning together.  Each storytime ends with a simple craft.
Mondays: Jan. 9 – Feb. 13, 11:30 a.m. - noon 

Tot Time (walkers up to 3 yrs. old and caregiver)
Stories, songs & fingerplays encourage brain development and promote early literacy skills.  This storytime is designed for short attention spans and wiggly children, followed by a time of unstructured play.
Tuesdays: Jan. 10 – Feb. 14, 11:15 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Saturday Crafts
One Saturday a month, children ages 6-12 can drop in to do a fun craft.
Saturdays: Jan. 7, Feb. 4, Mar.3, Apr. 7, 2:00 – 3:30 p.m.

After School Explorers (Grades K-3)
Kids in grades K-3 are invited to discover new things, have fun, make friends, read stories and make crafts.  Please pre-register.
Every other Tuesday: Jan. 10 – Apr. 17, 4:00 – 4:45 p.m.

Elementary Book Club (Grades 4-6)
We’ll read and discuss good books, have a treat, watch the book-related movies and do activities.  Sign up now!
Every other Tuesday: Jan. 17 – Apr. 24, 4:00 – 4:45 p.m.

Paws for Reading
Children of all ages can come to the library and read to beagles Wally and Katie, or Alex, a border collie.  All three dogs are certified therapy dogs, and friendly and calm.  Drop in after school.
Thursdays: Jan. 5 – May 31, 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.

PRIME TIME Family Reading
Coming in March on Monday nights! A new and exciting family reading experience for families with children ages 6 to 12.  See a children’s librarian for more information.

Storyteller  Come inside where it is cozy while storyteller Beth Bagley-Stanton warms you with stories about snowmen, penguins, polar bears and more. Tuesday, January 24,  6:30—7:30 p.m.

Family Game Night  Play our games (there are lots to choose from) or bring you own to strike up a match.  Mike Werner from Mike’s Comics will be here with lots of fun, new (even educational) games to try. You can even buy the ones you like to play at home.
Tuesday, February 28 , 6:30— 7:30 p.m.

Origami Workshop Fold your paper this way and that to make a bird, dog or a cat. Join us for an amazing origami workshop with Ming the Magnificent.
Tuesday, March 27, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Children’s Book Swap Bring in your books (in good condition) and trade them for others. Start bringing in books April 16th. The Children’s Book Swap will be April 21, 1:00—4:00 during our Spring Book Sale.
